Israeli troops began to withdraw from the south Lebanon Wednesday as part of the ceasefire deal signed with Hezbollah last month.

The US The Central Command (Centcom) said US Army General Michael Kurilla has visited Beirut to oversee the withdrawal as the Lebanese army takes over the area.

Centcom said Kurilla oversaw “the continued withdrawal of the Israeli army and the replacement of the Lebanese Forces in Al Khiam, Lebanon, as part of the agreement.”

Kurilla called it “an important first step in implementing a lasting cessation of hostilities and lays the foundation for further progress.”

Khiam, a city known for its history of resistance to Israel’s 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon, saw heavy fighting between Hezbollah and Israel in the last war, with Israeli forces failing to fully capture the area, but retained their positions after signing the ceasefire.

The situation escalated into full-blown war in September, when Israel launched a widespread bombing campaign and a ground invasion of Lebanon, before agreeing to a temporary ceasefire in November.

As part of the 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel is expected to withdraw from Lebanese areas, while Hezbollah settles north of the Litani River, leaving the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers in control.

Israel has been accused of several ceasefire violations as it continued to carry out sporadic attacks on southern Lebanon, killing a number of Lebanese, while keeping its drones and fighter jets over Beirut.

In addition, the Israeli army says it continues to be deployed in other areas of southern Lebanon and will act against what it considers threats to its security.

Nevertheless, the Lebanese government and international observers remain hopeful that the ceasefire will hold, leading to a more permanent cessation of hostilities if the terms are properly implemented.

The US and France act as observers between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israeli attacks on Lebanon killed more than 4,000 people in just over a year, 84 percent of them between September and November.
